24 Things I learnt before turning 24

Happy Wednesday to all my girlies and guylies🥺 So today is my birthday (02’  Aries baby). So much is going through my hand right now like am I really getting older.( Don’t get me wrong I think growth is important I am just looking back at my life I can say I have come far). Failed a lot but I got back up even stronger. Firstly I would like to Thank God for this day. Like I really have 6 years till I am 30 damn (lol). I know why you are here so let me stop rumbling and get into it. 24 things I learnt before turning 24: Be selfless at times—but only when it doesn’t cost you your peace. Learning to say NO is self-respect, not selfishness. No relationship is worth your sanity. Never compromise your happiness for temporary comfort. Stop people-pleasing—it drains you more than it fulfills you. Not everything deserves your energy or explanation. Focusing too much on romantic relationships can make you lose yourself. The right love won’t require you to shrink. Maintaining friends...

What you need to know about a digital detox?

Since the existence of cellphones, people have been glued to their screens. Seeking online validation from people you never met before. Every moment is an aesthetic that just deserves to be on camera. As lovely as that sounds, think to yourself about the last time you just left your phone and went about your day. (In this day and age probably never WFH needs a smartphone device, laptop and just constantly checking your phone for updates) When the weekend comes it’s the same cycle. But what if I told that a social media detox would change your life and the way you see things. Start small: pick a day in the week let’s say a Sunday where you don’t touch your phone or go on your socials. You just unwind and reset for the week ahead. It might be hard but try it. As someone who constantly has anxiety over my phone these breaks help me regulate my nervous system and think straight. Like girl ain’t no one looking for you a day or two off won’t hurt anyone. While taking time off a lot of refle...

Building Your Own Makeup Kit 101

Image
Over the years, I’ve grown deeply fond of the art behind makeup. How simple things like colour, shading, and technique can enhance someone’s natural features. When I first became interested in makeup, I didn’t actually own any products. Being excited about makeup obvs I bought everything on the market . I was excited and eager to learn, but I wasn’t educated about what my skin actually needed. Understanding My Skin: Dry Skin Since I don’t have any major skin issues, hydration was something my skin lacked. I’m talking ashy, chapped just not giving. this meant that all products I got needed to focus on hydration and nourishment, rather than matifying  products. Hydrating products have made a huge difference in how my makeup looks and wears throughout the day. When my skin is properly moisturised: My makeup applies more smoothly It lasts longer It doesn’t crease or cling to dry patches I’ve also learned how important it is to use products that contain SPF. Protecting your skin...

New Year, New Me — But With Intention This Time

Hey fellow blog readers… Firstly, Happy New Year, I hope you transitioned well into the year and you achieve greatness above all things. The last time I wrote here was sometime last year. Where have I been…(let’s talk about it). 2025 as a freelancer was not really great for me to the point that writing and showing up on my platforms was difficult. Choosing not to dwell in the past, I hope 2026 is different. This year we will try to be more consistent and write from the heart. This platform serves as a space where I share my experiences and vision with whose that I love. Will I be consistent this year? (Who knows) Just enjoy the ride… -LOVE DEE

Returning to The Beauty Column: Finding my voice again as an freelancer

Firstly, welcome back to my column family. To the newbies, my name is Limpho Nonkonyane, a journalist and content producer not only for this column but also for a luxury publication called, Luxe Living Africa. It’s not a drill I’m back for good and you probably wondering why I stopped publishing on this platform. So here it is…. I started my blog in June 2025, but due to the Luxe Living website launching, unfortunately my time was divided between the two platforms. Given that I’m not currently a freelancer to with not much financial freedom right now. I found myself running a tight ship. Now you probably asking yourself, “How did the lack of money, stop me from writing and sharing my piece?” While this year, I have been fighting for my life from career aspect and personally, let me not even mention spiritually and mentally. Despite being faced with unemployment opportunities to go to events have presented themselves and with every opportunity to engage with industry legends I took the...

CHAPTER 1: My journey into freelance writing

Image
Hi again..... Welcome to my first BEHIND THE COLUMN entry. I hope you stay and enjoy my journey with me as a newly freelance writer. Although I have introduced myself before, I will do it again, as this entry is more personal and the beginning of even greater things to come. My name is Limpho Liphiwe Nonkonyane, but I prefer being called Dee, mainly because most people get the pronunciation of my name wrong, and I've grown tired of correcting them. Limpho means 'God's gifts, a Sotho name given by my late dad, Vuyo Nonkonyane, and my middle name, Liphiwe, was provided by my Xhosa mother, Nomfundo Magingxa. Born on the 8th of April 2002, somewhere in Cape Town (I can't remember the hospital lol). Obivously I did the schooling thing and ended up later studying Journalism at IIE Rosebank College and graudauting with a cum laude. I just knew I wanted to be a journalist, as I loved being the centre of attention and just telling people things they didn't know (so I though...

Ultimate guide to mastering winter makeup for dry skin

Image
As someone who frequently struggles with dry skin, winter can be particularly challenging, as my skin tends to absorb all the moisturiser I apply, forcing me to layer multiple skincare products. This is a time when I experience breakouts and flakes on my face, which leads to me having to switch up my makeup routine to accommodate the new season. (I know what you are thinking, will I spend double the money on makeup products.) The easiest answer to that is no, and here's why... The makeup products we use are suitable for the various skin types we have, meaning that before purchasing your products, you need to know your skin type. Identifying your skin type is very easy, as you study the texture of your skin and how it absorbs moisture. The four main skin types are classified as follows: normal, oily, dry, combination, or sensitive skin. Nivea explains these skin types: Oily Skin: Characterised by extreme sebum production in the skin, particularly in the T-zone, leading to enlarged ...
