Returning to The Beauty Column: Finding my voice again as an freelancer

Firstly, welcome back to my column family. To the newbies, my name is Limpho Nonkonyane, a journalist and content producer not only for this column but also for a luxury publication called, Luxe Living Africa.

It’s not a drill I’m back for good and you probably wondering why I stopped publishing on this platform.

So here it is….

I started my blog in June 2025, but due to the Luxe Living website launching, unfortunately my time was divided between the two platforms.

Given that I’m not currently a freelancer to with not much financial freedom right now. I found myself running a tight ship.

Now you probably asking yourself, “How did the lack of money, stop me from writing and sharing my piece?”

While this year, I have been fighting for my life from career aspect and personally, let me not even mention spiritually and mentally.

Despite being faced with unemployment opportunities to go to events have presented themselves and with every opportunity to engage with industry legends I took them really seriously, and for everybody that knows me they know how good or a writer I am.

I leave for writing and great storytelling. But why did I stop? One word, I was demotivated for the most part.

This industry is tough and cut throat everybody is gunning for the number 1 spot here.

And to be honest with Ai has ruined a lot of writer’s opportunities, don’t get me started on companies that advertise internships for as little as R4k where you end up having to do tasks of about 4 people.

The challenges in this industry don’t stop there are a lot of gatekeepers, rude managers, high expectations from junior workers.

Even scrolling on Linkedlin these days is tough. Industry professionals are coming with their high standards saying things like, “as a Junior you should not be going out on weekends, you shouldn’t  be inactive on Linkedlin, you should not expect mentorship and the list goes on.”

This return isn’t about a perfect comeback is more about choosing myself again, and doing the things I love.

Be sure to stay tuned and enjoy the lovely content that is to come.

I love you and God bless.

-Love Dee
